Archive and Library Services Officer
Venesky-Brown’s client, a public sector organisation in Edinburgh, is currently looking to recruit an Archive and Library Services Officer until the end of March 2025 on a rate of £14.86/hour PAYE – working 37 hours per week. This role will be based onsite in Edinburgh.
 
Responsibilities:
 
– Welcome visitors to the organisation’s Search Room, assisting them with their enquiries and supervising use of archive material.
– Contribute to the filing and retrieval of books and archive material.
– Contribute to the acquisition of new volumes, electronic resources and subscriptions for the library
– Contribute to cataloguing of books and archive material to appropriate and agreed standards.
– Undertake research into the organisation’s archive and library material to inform user enquiries, cataloguing, the preparation of collection summaries, provenance and rights clarification.
– Contribute to the promotion of the organisation’s archive, library and online services through talks, blogs, newsletters and online resources, as well as the organisation and delivery of guided tours and events.
– Assist with research, special initiatives, lectures and exhibitions and other activities within the Archives forward plan
– Other duties delegated by the Head or Deputy Head of Archives.
 
Essential Skills:
 
– Demonstrable experience in dealing with customer enquiries and delivering quality service in a friendly and professional manner
– A demonstrable commitment to archive or library work as a career
– A high standard of computer literacy and IT skills including using Microsoft Office – Word, Excel and PowerPoint
– Excellent attention to detail and proven ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and motivation when performing routine and repetitive tasks
– A flexible approach and willingness to learn new skills, practices, procedures and to build a knowledge of the archives and library.
– Good written and verbal communication skills
– The ability to be a good team worker and to work with minimal supervision
– A minimum of 3 Highers (or equivalent), including English and Maths or demonstrable relevant experience.
 
Desirable Skills:
 
– A degree in a relevant subject – archaeology, history, architectural history – or equivalent relevant experience.
– Experience of working in a library and/or archive setting
– Knowledge and experience of library and/or archive cataloguing standards, processes and procedures
– Open to learning new skills, practices, procedures and building a knowledge of the organisation’s archives
– Enthusiasm to communicate the work of the organisation
– A full driving license (staff may have to travel to remote or rural areas of Scotland, e.g. to deliver outreach, which is not always possible by public transport).
