Archive Officer
Venesky-Brown’s client, a public sector organisation in Edinburgh, is currently looking to recruit an Archive Officer until the end of March 2025 on a rate of £14.86/hour PAYE – working 37 hours per week. This role will be based onsite in Edinburgh.
Responsibilities:
– Catalogue archive material to appropriate and agreed standards.
– Assist with building and managing stakeholders (internal and external) to ensure regular deposits of archive.
– Undertake research into the organisation’s archive and library material to inform user enquiries, cataloguing, the preparation of collection summaries, provenance and rights clarification
– Contribute to the promotion of the organisation’s archive, library and online services through talks, blogs, newsletters and online resources, as well as the organisation and delivery of guided tours and events.
– Assist with the delivery of archive enquiry services
– Assist with research, special initiatives, lectures and exhibitions and other activities within the Archives forward plan
– Other duties delegated by the Head or Deputy Head of Archives.
Essential Skills:
– A demonstrable commitment to archive work as a career
– Excellent attention to detail and proven ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and motivation when performing routine and repetitive tasks
– A flexible approach and willingness to learn new skills, practices, procedures and to build a knowledge of the organisation’s archives and library.
– Good written and verbal communication skills
– The ability to be a good team worker and to work with minimal supervision
– Experience in delivering quality customer service in a friendly and professional manner
– A high standard of computer literacy and IT skills including using Microsoft Office – Word, Excel and PowerPoint
– A minimum of 3 Highers (or equivalent), including English and Maths or demonstrable relevant experience.
Desirable Skills:
– Experience of working in an archive setting.
– Knowledge and experience of archive cataloguing standards, processes and procedures
– Demonstrable knowledge and enthusiasm for archaeology, architecture and/or history
– Commitment to continuing professional development in line with wider sector best practice
– Enthusiasm to communicate the work of the organisation
– A full driving license (staff may have to travel to remote or rural areas of Scotland, e.g. staff must liaise with depositors of archives, which is not always possible by public transport).
– A degree in a relevant subject – archaeology, history, architectural history – or equivalent relevant experience
