Cost Accountant
Venesky-Brown’s client, a public sector organisation in Edinburgh, is currently looking to recruit a Cost Accountant for a 6 month contract with possible extension on an annual salary of £42,681. The benefits include 45 days holiday (30 AL and 15 fixed) and 17.6% pension. This role is hybrid with 50% of the week on site, usually two days but may need 3 here or there.
 
Responsibilities:
 
– Review the costing and pricing of contracts to feed into decision making / agree upon a set of costing & pricing guidelines / techniques with the relevant stakeholders. Where permitted by external regulators should be looking to generate the maximum level of return on investment – review contracts to ensure this principle is being adhered to. Liaise with stakeholders to analyse the key areas of contract management as follows:
– Review and develop existing costing and pricing models, in line with internal and external guidelines, to produce a robust view of return on investment at an activity level to drive senior level decision making. Part of the process will include the identification of appropriate cost drivers to allocate costs to key areas. Costing models should be efficient and have accompanying documentation so they can be handed over to the Finance team at end of the Contract.
– Meet with budget holders and department heads to review, discuss & record all elements of contract pricing that falls within their area.
– Provide effective financial challenge and formulate recommendations for new ways of working to improve efficiency.
– Promote an understanding and awareness of costing and pricing, including the delivery of training as appropriate.
– Ensure that the financial regulations, financial policies and procedures are being strictly adhered to.
– Support departmental managers in the preparation of tariff schedules and provide guidance of recommended changes.
– To support departmental managers in the costing and pricing of more specialist contracts and bids. Where issues are identified in relation to the service the Finance Department provides to all stakeholders, to work with the affected parties towards satisfactory solutions.
– Work closely with Finance Manager and Director of Finance to establish the central principles of contract management to be promoted across departments.
– To work closely with the Finance Manger to develop & record detailed costing models to enable support and academic staff to make effective decisions, including the financial appraisal of new activities.
– Ensure that aspects of work which may be subject to internal or external audit scrutiny are completed to a standard which will result in compliance.
– Lead the development of new/updated procedures and controls within the Finance Department to support accuracy of new reporting models.
– Working with an external consultant and the Management Accounts team to automate cost models in Unit 4 as appropriate/where possible.
– To assist in the development and maintenance of reporting systems for cost management purposes.
– To undertake any other reasonable duties within the framework of this post.
 
Essential Skills:
 
– Either a HND qualification or a degree and ideally will hold a recognised CCAB qualification. 
– Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
– Delivery of process improvement/change in a large-scale institution.
– Experience of working with range of finance systems.
– Demonstratable experience of working cross-functionally to deliver a project.
– Able to work independently.
– Problem solving and solution focussed.
– Strong at workload management and planning. Able to work to deadlines.
 
Desirable Skills:
 
– Knowledge and experience of using finance system Unit 4.
– Project management qualification.
– Previously worked for organisation of similar size/scope.
