Deputy Reseach Finance Manager
Venesky-Brown’s client, a public sector organisation in Edinburgh, is currently looking to recruit a Deputy Research Finance Manager for a 6 months contract on a rate of £21.56/hour PAYE. This role will be hybrid based with 1 day a week in the office (Tuesday) in central Edinburgh, 5 days a week in the office is also an option.
 
Responsibilities:
 
– Manage a team of staff within the Research Grants Team, establishing the cross-team support required to underpin the administration of research grants portfolios.
– Actively managing, motivating and developing staff within the Research Grants Team by providing induction, training, workload allocation, point of escalation and performance management.
– Continuously monitor a reporting suite of key performance indicators to support a proactive approach to workload management across the team ensuring balanced and transparent portfolios.
– Identify risks arising on research awards and, in conjunction with the extended management team, mitigate or manage risks through the provision of advice, guidance and support to the research community.
– Ensure compliance with funder terms and conditions through the review of awards and claims, identifying post-award issues, in areas such as procurement, capital expenditure and refurbishment and research governance. Liaise with appropriate departments where necessary.
– Contribute to a framework of policies and procedures working with Research community ensuring their understanding and buy-in to policy and process, reviewing any sticking points or other issues as required.
– Developing and maintaining strong working partnerships across the research community in Centres, Institutes, Schools, Colleges and Professional Services, to deliver a research finance service which is focused on delivering high-quality research within appropriate financial control frameworks.
– Work with members of Research Office teams to develop ERO-wide relationships, to recommend and implement innovative solutions to improve service quality and effectiveness.
– Work with Research Finance Manager, internal and external audit teams to assist with implementing continuous improvement from audit observations and recommendations to ensure compliance with funders’ terms and conditions.
 
Essential Skills:
 
– A strong financial management and accounting background, with experience of working within a robust financial control environment.
–  Experience of management of staff within a deadline driven, high volume financial administration function,
– Sound judgement and discretion.
– A positive, open-minded and enthusiastic attitude.
– The ability and discipline to plan and prioritise own work, and to ensure that staff are able to do likewise.
– The ability to work consistently to extremely tight deadlines.
– Excellent interpersonal and staff management skills.
– Excellent planning and organisational skills.
– Excellent oral communication skills, able to deal confidently with researchers and funders.
 
Desirable Skills:
 
– Knowledge of research award management.
– Accounting/auditing qualification – part/newly qualified or qualified by demonstrable experience.
