Mechanical Technician
Venesky-Brown’s client, a public sector organisation in Glasgow, is currently looking to recruit an Mechanical Technician for a Permanent contract on a salary between £32,332 – £36,024.

 

Responsibilities:

 

– Using manual and CNC machining equipment (turning/milling), design and manufacture mechanical components and systems to a high standard of finish and accuracy within defined timescales, using a wide range of ferrous, non-ferrous and occasionally exotic materials, using the full range of mechanical workshop machine tools and equipment.

– Be responsible for the management of technical aspects of the Mechanical Workshop Services, including where relevant, management of the technical resources and technical staff. Maintain workshop consumables stocks and ensure the suitable engineering tooling.

– Ensure timely delivery of quality machining production, optimising machining processes, testing manufactured component parts, troubleshooting complex technical problems, and seeking continuous improvement.

– Be responsible for setting up experimental apparatus in the preparation of undergraduate teaching labs, including resolving issues with the design and operation of technical equipment (training will be given on equipment).

– Provide technical advice and guidance for students and staff on appropriate use of equipment. Deliver verbal instruction to students of assigned engineering application labs on basic engineering skills. (training will be given to deliver verbal instruction).

– Keep up to date with developments in relevant technical areas and within the mechanical workshop technology to ensure contribution to research goals is optimised. Independently generate ideas and implement agreed proposals for experimental strategies.

– Where relevant, take day to day control of technical workshop budgets, making informed decisions and advice on purchasing of capital equipment and consumables following consultation with appropriate colleagues.

– Be responsible for the day-to-day management of and compliance with relevant Health and Safety and/or other specialist legal requirements. Maintain all necessary records in accordance with set requirements. Where relevant, keep up to date with developments or legal changes relevant to the work of the research group and advise and train group members as appropriate. Report any potential issues to the PI/service/facility manager, Safety Committee and/or relevant internal or external bodies timeously.

– Work collaboratively with others, including within the wider organisation and where relevant with external contacts, to enhance the delivery of the research aims and support the broader strategic aims of the organisation. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings/discussions and contribute to the wider organsiation activities as required, including the Technician Commitment key themes,

– Undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by Technical Services Management.

 

Essential Skills:

 

– Either Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role

– OR: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 [Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma] or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role

– Demonstrable specialist technical skills in manual and CNC machining (turning/milling). Significant breadth and depth of technical knowledge of mechanical fundamental principles and materials, standard mechanical engineering manufacturing techniques, and recognised as an expert in machining

– Solid experience of manufacturing components/apparatus to a high level of precision using a full range of workshop machine tools, developing and refining designs from limited or incomplete information, including evidence of previous outputs and professional development

– Significant IT skills, including proficient user of relevant specialist software packages in Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM) associated with component manufacturing on CNC milling machines and lathes

– Experience of understanding and interpreting complex technical requirements of service users. Able to work from technical drawings/sketches and verbal instructions, interpreting the requirements of service users with limited competence in the mechanical field, and implementing appropriate methods of achieving their needs

– Ability to plan and prioritise a broad range of technical work to meet competing demands, planning and scheduling work, and managing time and service users expectations efficiently

– Excellent teamworking skills and experience of operating independently when necessary in progressing and delivering goals within set timescales, under the direction of a lead technicians and managers

– Up to date knowledge of legislative requirements applicable in mechanical engineering environment, including but not limited to Health and Safety

 

Desirable Skills:

 

– Good knowledge of metal joining techniques (welding, brazing, soldering)

– Good knowledge of surface grinding and certified in handling abrasive wheels

– Experience of verbal delivery to students/apprentices. If not training will be given to attain for Trainers’ certificate.

– Familiar with and able to use CAD packages such as Solidworks, Fusion 360 etc. (Training will be given if required)

– Experience of managing budgets, including approving spends and monitoring outgoings on behalf of others
