System Administrator
Venesky-Brown’s client, a public sector organisation in Glasgow, is currently looking to recruit 2 x Windows Server / AD Administrators until the 31st of July 2025 on a rate of £400/day OutsideIR35. These roles will be hybrid working from Glasgow.
 
Responsibilities:
 
– Contribute to the installation, configuration, and maintenance of server infrastructure, including physical and virtual servers, storage systems and cloud-based platforms.
– Monitor system performance and proactively address issues to ensure optimal uptime and performance.
– Troubleshoot and resolve technical problems and system outages, collaborating with senior team members where required.
– Support disaster recovery and business continuity efforts by assisting in backup and restoration activities.
– Provide technical support and assistance to end users, IT staff, and other stakeholders, addressing system-related issues, inquiries, and service requests in a timely and professional manner.
– Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including IT professionals, academic, professional staff, and external vendors, to plan and implement infrastructure projects, upgrades, and migrations, ensuring alignment with organisational goals and priorities.
– Document system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps, maintaining comprehensive records and knowledge base articles to facilitate knowledge sharing, training, and continuity of operations.
– Follow all agreed operating policies, procedures and/or practices as approved by the organisation Information Services, IT or the specific function to maintain a secure and robust environment.
– Any other duties and projects which may from time to time be required by the Line Manager or Head of IT.
 
Essential Skills:
 
– Either: Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 7 (Advanced Higher / Scottish Vocational Qualification level 3, Higher National Certificate) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role
– Detailed Technical knowledge of server and network administration concepts.
– Familiarity with Microsoft Windows Server and Linux/Unix operating systems.
– Working knowledge of information security best-practice in a heterogeneous networked environment.
– Well-developed problem-solving and troubleshooting skills to analyse complex issues, identifying the root cause and implement effective solutions to prevent any re-occurrence.
– Demonstrable ability to competently work with scripting languages, such as Windows PowerShell/Linux shell script, for automated tasks and batch operations.
– Demonstratable attention to detail, with the ability to analyse low complexity requirements and implement effective solutions.
– Ability to work independently, as well as part of an IT Team, using own initiative and judgement to know when to escalate issues to senior colleagues.
– Proven interpersonal and communication skills and adapting own style to meet the needs of others.
– Experience of understanding and interpreting the technical requirements of service users and implementing appropriate methods of achieving their needs.
– Ability to learn and adapt to changing technologies and procedures.
– Experience of working with a range of operating systems other than Windows desktops, e.g. Linux, MacOS, Windows Server.
– Experience of the implementation and support of scalable servers including, but not restricted to, storage management, network services and protocols, backup software and techniques, virtualisation systems (i.e. Hyper-V, Docker) User authentication (i.e. Active Directory, LDAP) and database management.
– Experience of installing, configuring, and supporting specialist software.
 
Desirable Skills:
 
– Knowledge of system monitoring and capacity planning on a server infrastructure
– Experience with server systems (e.g. Windows, Linux) covering: Management Tools, Backup / Recovery
– Knowledge of formal problem-solving frameworks supporting root cause analysis (5-Whys, Fishbone etc)
– Awareness of the ISO2700-1 and Cyber Essentials Plus frameworks
