Laboratory Manager
Venesky-Brown’s client, a public sector organisation in Roslin, is currently looking to recruit a Laboratory Manager for as soon as possible for an initial 12 week contract with option to extend on a rate of £22.19/hour PAYE – working 9am-5pm (with some flexibility required). This role will be based onsite.
 
Responsibilities:
 
– Oversee operations within a diagnostic laboratory, ensuring test turnaround times and budgetary targets are met.
– Lead the laboratory’s work activities by planning workloads and ensuring sufficient staffing and resources to maintain timely test results.
– Drive projects that support growth, optimise workflows, and expand the laboratory’s testing offerings.
– Supervise the maintenance of diagnostic equipment and other technical resources within the laboratory.
– Ensure that laboratory buildings and infrastructure are properly maintained.
– Collaborate with the Quality Team to uphold testing quality standards.
– Assist with bench technical duties as required.
– Supervise the maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of equipment to ensure optimal performance.
– Contribute to financial planning, ensuring the cost-effective allocation of resources and proper budget management.
– Plan and manage stock levels, ensuring the timely procurement of consumables and equipment by coordinating with external suppliers.
– Identify and implement strategies to improve financial efficiency and control costs.
– Contribute to the development of laboratory policies and procedures and communicate any changes to the team.
– Prepare reports, presentations, and summaries of work activities, including turnaround times, instrument downtime, productivity, quality, and other performance metrics. Produce various analyses as necessary to identify issues and resolve queries.
– Develop, review, and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and risk assessments.
– Oversee the implementation of the laboratory’s Quality Management System (QMS) and ensure compliance with both internal and external quality standards.
– Implement and manage risk strategies, including Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA), in response to incident reports.
– Monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to uphold service excellence and drive continuous quality improvement.
– Lead internal and external audits, ensuring adherence to documentation and compliance with accreditation standards.
– Manage health and safety activities within the laboratory, ensuring compliance with health and safety policies.
– Provide leadership and mentorship to laboratory technicians, ensuring high performance standards and fostering professional development.
– Develop structured training programmes for laboratory staff to enhance skills and ensure regulatory compliance.
– Oversee staff recruitment, succession planning, and performance management processes.
– Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment that encourages innovation and continuous learning.
– Keep abreast of industry developments and changes that may impact work activities and implement best practices to enhance service delivery.
 
Essential Skills:
 
– Degree in biomedical/biological sciences or equivalent OR Extensive in-post, specialist technical experience and knowledge of working in a diagnostic clinical laboratory or similar setting.
– Extensive working experience in a laboratory with a significant component of clinical chemistry and/or haematology.
– Significant experience in laboratory management and quality assurance, and advanced knowledge of procedures in clinical chemistry and/or haematology
– Practical knowledge of health and safety regulations (COSHH, risk assessment/management) relevant to a biomedical laboratory.
– Strong understanding of laboratory information management systems (LIMS)
– Experience in people management, supervision, training, and competency assessment
– Capability to develop novel processes or methodologies.
– Excellent problem-solving, organisational, and leadership skills
– Strong written and verbal communication skills
– Proficient with basic data analysis, statistical and quality management software.
– Ability to work independently and within a team
 
Desirable Skills:
 
– Postgraduate qualification in laboratory management, business management, quality management, biomedical sciences or equivalent experience
– Risk Management qualification or equivalent experience
– Experience in a diagnostic clinical laboratory preferably in the veterinary field
– Experience in urinalysis, faecal analysis and cytology
– Experience in process innovation and service improvement
– Experience in financial planning and budget management.
– Familiarity with digital pathology and laboratory automation.
– Experience of or the ability to engage with established and emerging technologies in diagnostic clinical pathology.
– Experience with budgeting and financial planning
– Programming and advanced computer skills
– Excellent skills in statistical analysis for biomedical laboratories.
